A London Magazine containing serialised novels, light essays, verse, biographies, travel accounts etc. During its early life contributors were anonymous with many of the stories written by the Editor with articles by G A Sala & R Le Fanu. The magazine was directed at a "genteel, middle-class lady public of an average educational standard." The novels were considered sensational/sentimental. In 1876 the magazine was sold to a publisher who included full plate illustrations & widened its appeal. Wilkie Collins contributed The Haunted Hotel & the complete serialisation of Heart & Science.
